Kings of Leon is an American alternative rock band formed in 1999 in Nashville, Tennessee. The group consists of three brothers (Nathan, Caleb and Jared Followill) and a cousin (Matthew Followill). The group’s name comes from Nathan’s father and grandfather, Caleb and Jared, both called Leon. The province of León was actually a kingdom in the Middle Ages.

They are considered the southern counterpart of the Strokes. They offer a mix of Southern rock, garage rock, post-punk, country and blues.

A quick success!

First of all, they started with an EP, Holy Roller Novocaine, released in February 2003. In August released their first album, Youth and Young Manhood, which contains four EP songs. It includes the erotic Molly’s Chambers and the very soul California Waiting.

Following this, they reach a relative celebrity, especially in the United States. They are chosen by popular bands like The Strokes or U2 to accompany them on their tours. In France the album becomes Disc of the Month for Rock & Folk.

In October 2004, their second album Aha Shake Heartbreak was released in the UK. This one is applauded for its mix between garage rock and Southern swagger. The Bucket, 4 Kicks and King of the Rodeo come out in singles. It was released on February 22, 2005 in the United States. The Bucket even ranks 16th in the English charts. The album reaches only 95th place in France. They toured with Bob Dylan in 2005 and Pearl Jam in 2006.

In April 2007, they released their third album Because of the Times, featuring singles On Call, Charmer and Fans. The album ranks first in sales in Great Britain and Ireland. A single date at the Bataclan in Paris in June marks their return to France. This concert is full!

Then, in August 2007, they returned to France at the Rock en Seine festival headlining. Then they pass to the Zenith of Paris in July 2008, being head of poster of numerous European festivals.

In September 2008, their fourth album Only by the Night is released. In this one we find the titles Sex on Fire, Crawl and Use Somebody. This album was the third best selling album in 2008 in Britain, the first in Australia.

Finally, the group won numerous prizes. Indeed, in 2008, they won two Brit Awards (group and international album), and a Grammy Awards. The Kings of Leon are nominated for the Best Group for the MTV Europe Music Awards 2009. Finally, in 2010, the band won two Grammy Awards (Best Rock Song and Best Recording of the Year).
