IAM is a French rap band, originally from Marseille, in Bouches-du-Rhône. Formed in 1989, it consists of Akhenaton (Philippe Fragione) and Shurik’n (Geoffroy Mussard) on vocals. Also from Kheops (Éric Mazel), Imhotep (Pascal Perez) and Kephren (François Mendy) to the turntables. And formerly of Freeman (Malek Brahimi).

IAM, a French rap pillar!

To begin with, IAM is both an acronym and an interpretation. At the time of the civil rights struggle in the United States, demonstrators marched with “I AM A MAN” signs. “It is against the word” integration “that we have chosen to be called IAM. In Arabic, this means “history, time passing,” says Akhenaton.

In addition to the English translation of I am, IAM has several meanings: “Imperial Asiatic Men” in reference to their fascination with Egypt, China and Japan, which they consider to be the cradle of our civilization. Other meanings of the acronym may be “Algerian Malagasy Italian”, referring to the multiple origins of the members.

The group publishes its first studio album, “… of Planet Mars” in 1991. This one echoes and sees IAM being broadcast in the media (radio, TV …). The group will also make several appearances on the French show RapLine. Then, IAM publishes his second album “Ombre is light”, in 1993. This one allows to increase a little more its popularity. It follows a third opus “The School of the microphone of money”, published in 1997. The latter wins two awards to the Victories of the music. It is also certified diamond disc.

Moreover, IAM returns in 2003 with the release of his fourth album, “Revoir une printemps”, whose reception is mixed. Saison 5, the group’s fifth album, was released in April 2007. The band’s sixth studio album, “Arts martiens”, was released in April 2013. It was followed in the same year by the album … IAM. In 2017, the band released their album “Rêvolution”.

IAM is considered one of the pillars of French rap as well as one of the best bands in its history!
